Type and Incidence of Soft Tissue Sarcomas in Korea: 2001-2007.

The Korean Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology Study Group of the Korean Society of Pathologists conducted a nationwide retrospective analysis of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) to provide the clinicopathologic characteristics of STS within the population of the Republic of Korea.
The cases of STS were collected during a 7-year period (2001-2007) from 19 institutes in Korea. All cases were classified according to the histologic criteria proposed by the World Health Organization. Clinicopathologic data were reviewed.
Data from 722 patients (median age, 50 years) were collected. Data showed a slight male predominance. The most frequent types of STS in decreasing order were liposarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, leiomyosarcoma, and synovial sarcoma. STS occurred throughout the body, although approximately half (47.8%) were located in the extremities. The majority of STS was histologically classified as high grade with a large tumor size (>5 cm). The overall survival rate for the patients was 76.3% (median follow-up time, 26 months; range, 1 to 89 months). Histologic grade, tumor size, American Joint Committee on Cancer stage, tumor site, and resection status were prognostic. Significant independent adverse prognostic factors were large tumor size (>5 cm) and tumor site other than extremities.
We reported the distribution and characteristics of STS in the Republic of Korea.

Glial choristoma is defined as a mass that is composed of mature, normal brain tissue, isolated from the cranial cavity or spinal canal. The involvement of an extracranial non-midline location, especially the middle ear or mastoid region, is quite exceptional. We report here on a case of glial choristoma of the middle ear in a 2-year-old boy. He presented with otalgia and otorrhea that had lasted for 6 months, and radiological studies revealed a mass-like lesion with soft tissue density in the middle ear cavity. The patient underwent simple mastoidectomy and tympanoplasty. Histologically, the mass was composed of disorganized but mature, normal glial tissue with immunoreactivity for glial fibrillary acidic protein. The patient had no previous history of head trauma or surgery, and no evidence of central nervous system connection was noted on the radiological or operative findings. This mass was regarded as a primary glial heterotopia rather than an acquired encephalocele.
PDGF-R alpha Expression in Preneoplastic and Neoplastic Hepatocellular Lesions: A Rat Model N-nitrosomorpholine Stop Experiment.

N-nitrosomorpholine (NNM) is a genotoxic hepatocarcinogenic agent. Preneoplastic and neoplastic hepatocyte lesions were induced in rats by oral exposure to NNM (200 mg/L) in a stop model experiment. Platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGF-R) is a tyrosine kinase receptor that works with PDGF, stimulating cellular growth and proliferation. The present study was designed to determine the role of PDGF-R alpha expression in hepatocellular neoplasms and precursors.
Seventeen rats out of a starting number of 30 died. From the fifth week until the 24th week one or two rats were evaluated. Preneoplastic single cells or foci, foci of altered hepatocytes (FAH) hepatocellular adenomas (HCA) and hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) were studied histologically, and the expressions of GSTp and PDGF-R alpha by immunohistochemistry.
At the fifth week, GSTp +single cells showed PDGF-R alpha expression (20.8+/-5.8%). At the sixth week, GSTp +single cells, located at periportal areas, co-expressed PDGF-R alpha (43.4+/-9.6%). Over the next several weeks periportal hepatocytes showed weaker PDGF-R alpha expression but no GSTp. GSTp+FAH, and all HCA, demonstrated no PDGF-R alpha expression. However, nine out of 10 (90%) HCC showed PDGF-R alpha expression.
These data showed that there were two peaks of PDGF-R alpha expression, and suggest that the earlier expression is related with the response to NNM-induced hepatocyte toxicity, and that the later response is associated to malignant transformation.
Diffuse Leiomyomatosis of the Uterus: A Brief Case Report.

Diffuse leiomyomatosis of the uterus is a rare condition that is distinguished from the uterine leiomyoma due to the diffuse involvement of the myometrium by numerous, ill-defined, smooth muscle nodules. We present here a case of diffuse uterine leiomyomatosis in a 34-year-old woman. The hysterectomy revealed a symmetrically enlarged uterus containing numerous, small, ill-defined leiomyomatous nodules. Microscopically, the nodules were composed of compact fascicles and interweaving bundles of uniform benign smooth muscle cells. On the immunohistochemical staining, the progesterone receptor level was higher in the leiomyomatosis than in the adjacent normal myometrial tissue, but the estrogen receptor level and Ki-67 labeling index were equal in both areas. At the twelve months follow-up, this patient has been doing very well with no evidence of pelvic or intraabdominal recurrence of disease.

Angioleiomyoma of the sinonasal area is an extremely rare benign neoplasm. To the best of our knowledge, only 26 cases have been described. Here, we report a case of angioleiomyoma arising in the nasal cavity of a 60-year-old woman. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of proliferating smooth muscle cells punctuated with thick-walled vessels with slit-like lumina. The tumor was negative for estrogen and progesterone receptor by immunohistochemical study. Further studies are needed to clarify whether the growth of this tumor is sex steroid-dependent.
