- Epidermoid cysts occur rarely on the palms and soles, where hair is not present.
These cysts have long been assumed to arise from traumatic implantation of epidermal fragment, but the pathogenesis is still controversial.
Recently, with microscopic findings, immunohistochemical features, and molecular studies, the epidermoid cysts of the sole may be induced by the human papillomavirus. We report two cases of epidermoid cysts of the sole with the discussion of the pathogenesis.

- An extremely unusual case of epidermoid cyst showing diffuse parakeratosis and aggressive clinical behavior is presented.
A destructive bone lesion with surrounding ill-defined soft tissue lesion was found by computed tomography in a 63 year-old man complaining of painful swelling of the right buttock. He had a history of surgical excision twice for epidermoid cysts of soft tissue of the right hip during recent one year. On aspiration cytology, the aspirate was highly cellular and mostly composed of desquamated nucleated squamous cells. Operation finding revealed that the iliac bone was irregularly destroyed and filled with gray-white cheesy material and necrotic bone debris. Adjacent gluteus muscle showed scattered gray-white lesions. The curettage specimen showed bone necrosis and desquamated squamous cells filling the marrow spaces. The lesion within muscle revealed epidermoid cyst with diffuse parakeratosis.
- Hybrid Cyst Coexisting with Glomus Coccygeum.

- A 36-year-old female patient with a mass in the coccygeal region underwent surgical removal of the mass, and this revealed a hybrid cyst in coexistence with a glomus coccygeum. This unusual cutaneous cyst had an epithelial lining composed of keratinizing, stratified squamous epithelium with an intact granular layer immediately adjacent to apocrine cells, and the apocrine cells showed the characteristic features of "decapitation secretion". The glomus coccygeum, which is a minor finding in specimens from the sacral area and it may represent a diagnostic challenge to the unaware observer, was incidentally identified in the dermis. The glomus coccygeum was located beneath the epithelial transition area of the hybrid cyst.
Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the cytoplasm of the epithelioid glomus cells was positive for smooth muscle actin, and these epithelioid glomus cells were arranged in concentric layers around blood vessels, and the cellular stroma surrounding the glomus bodies were positive for S-100 protein.

- Epidermoid cysts in the kidney have rarely been reported, and in most cases its pathogenesis has not been well understood. We report a case of an epidermoid cyst in a kidney with nephrolithiasis in a 61-year-old man. A pyelonephrolithotomy was performed on the patient four years ago to treat nephrolithiasis of the left kidney. During the follow-up, a newly developed mass was discovered three years ago and the mass has recently increased in size. A unilateral nephrectomy was performed under the clinical impression of renal cell carcinoma. Gross examination revealed a well encapsulated cystic mass measuring 3.0 x 2.0 x 2.0 cm and containing lumps of soft whitish material, in the upper pole of the left kidney. This location was the same as that of previous nephrolithiasis. Microscopic examination revealed typical findings of an epidermoid cyst.
We suspect that the chronic irritation induced by renal stones may be associated with the development of the epidermoid cyst in this case.
